Gray Catbirds - What's On the menu? https://www.nancylbarrettphotography.com/blog/2020/6/gray-catbirds--whats-on-the-menu QUIET CORNER, CT - PHOTOS - Four little eggs have successfully hatched and my little Catbird family is rapidly growing.  With the nest just feet from my office window and a perfect landing area nearby, I've had a front row seat to the non-stop smorgasbord and have been documenting the various food items including berries.  There is no end to the parents' dedication to their chicks with a new delight arriving every few minutes.  The only break was when a thundershower rolled through, at which point one of the parents went to the nest and shielded the chicks from the downpour.  As soon as the rain let up the feeding continued only this time newly surfaced earthworms were on the menu.

Catbird Dance https://www.nancylbarrettphotography.com/blog/2020/6/catbird-dance Nobody cares about gray catbirds, right?  After all, they are gray and are often heard and seen just about everywhere. I've never paid much attention to them until a nice couple decided to nest outside my home office window. The nest building seemed to go on for weeks as the couple scavenged around my brown grass for the perfect building materials.  I couldn't resist peeking at the nest with four bright blue eggs left unattended one afternoon.  I have since learned that the female lays one egg per day and has the sole responsibility of brooding the little gems.  Soon after the project was completed I noticed the male perching on a nearby garden fence with a nice juicy caterpillar, presumably for his mate.  I watched with amusement as he taunted her with the tasty treat before handing it over, something I thought to be quite unnecessary.  Really, what's that all about?  So I set up my camera and opened the window and waited to see if this dance would be repeated.  I was rewarded within a few minutes when I was able to capture the below images.

Eastern Bluebirds https://www.nancylbarrettphotography.com/blog/2017/8/eastern-bluebirds KILLINGLY, CT - SLIDE SHOW - This spring and summer one resident Eastern Bluebird couple raised two successful broods in my yard.  Now that they are nearly full grown, the parents and youngsters stop by just before sunset nearly every evening.   They perch on a dead cedar tree in-between dives into the grass for insects while their parents watch passively from the rooftop or a nearby tree.  The juvenile birds are not yet the expert hunters, like their parents, and will resort to picking insects from the gutter along the roofline.  The below slideshow contains some of my favorite Bluebird images from this season.

Birds of the Week April 14 2017 https://www.nancylbarrettphotography.com/blog/2017/4/birds-of-the-week-april-14-2017 This week brought an assortment of large and small birds with some of the migrating songbirds entering the mix.  Puffed-up Tom turkeys are strutting all around the northeast corner of Connecticut and when they can't be seen, they can be heard.  A trip by Middle Reservoir in Killingly revealed Palm Warblers skipping all around my favorite cove, a first sighting this season.

The Five Mile River in Putnam has always been a wildlife hot spot and I was fortunate enough to see a river otter pop up out of the water with a catfish in its mouth.  There was only time enough for a few quick shots before it dashed out of sight with its morning meal.  Bird sightings on the river included Red-winged Blackbirds and Savannah Sparrows.

Red-tailed Hawk at Duck Marsh Preserve https://www.nancylbarrettphotography.com/blog/2016/12/red-tailed-hawk-at-duck-marsh-preserve POMFRET, CT - Yesterday marked the official start of winter and the shortest day of the year here in the northern hemisphere.  It's also the time that I like to start the spring countdown.  But even with the diminished daylight hours, the opportunity for birding exists.  I spotted this red-tailed hawk while driving by Duck Marsh Preserve.  The patient predator sat atop a bluebird house and allowed a number of photos from across the meadow before flying away with its hunting partner.

Baby Box Turtle Update https://www.nancylbarrettphotography.com/blog/2016/9/baby-box-turtle-update KILLINGLY, CT - It's been nearly three months since I last reported on the local box turtle population.   The story began in late May, as it does time and again.  The turtles come out of the woods to mate, I take a bunch of photos, name any that I don't recognize and watch to see where the females lay the eggs.  Once in awhile, I actually get to see two turtles mating.  This year, I covered the eggs with a wire cage to protect them from predators after observing nest destruction in 2015.  All of this is a small contribution to help keep the species alive here in my little corner of the world.  I also enjoy making short nature videos and the box turtle is a favorite subject.  This fascination began in 2007 when I first discovered that my place was inhabited by a number of these captivating little creatures.  Box turtles are a species of special concern in CT, and many other states, so please don't capture or keep them as pets.

Birds of the Week Sept 1 2016 https://www.nancylbarrettphotography.com/blog/2016/9/birds-of-the-week-sept-1-2016 KILLINGLY, CT - It's a sure sign that fall is approaching when the summer songbirds vanish, their voices no longer present on cool August mornings.  The sweet morning melodies sung by the Indigo Bunting, Scarlet Tanager, Wood Thrush and Baltimore Oriole are now replaced by the familiar Chickadee and Tufted Titmouse.  It's sad to see them go but there is plenty to see and hear if you're looking around.  This week's selection includes Great Blue Heron, Common Yellowthroat, American Redstart, Northern Flicker and a juvenile Rose-breasted Grosbeak.

The volume has been lowered significantly on this video because it was just too loud. This is a condensed version of what took place between 4:30 PM - 7:00 PM. The storm was followed by a 12 hour power outage.

The Little Brook July 2016 https://www.nancylbarrettphotography.com/blog/2016/7/the-little-brook--july-2016 Killingly, CT - Once again, it's that time of year when the water flow at little brook slows to a trickle.  In spite of the low water level, creatures arrive daily to drink, bath and search for food.  This compilation video, captured over the past few weeks,  reveals the usual visitors and a pair of river otters making their way up-stream in search of a meal.  With raccoons, herons and otters all competing for food, the tiny brook trout don't stand a chance in their shrinking pools.

Birds of the Week July 22 2016 https://www.nancylbarrettphotography.com/blog/2016/7/birds-of-the-week-july-22-2016 Killingly, CT - Earlier this week the second brood of baby Bluebirds were just about ready to fledge and the parents had to work overtime to satisfy their hungry offspring.  Images were captured of the little fledglings eagerly peering out of the box awaiting the next delicious meal.  Only two days later the whole family was nowhere to be found, so it seems that the ambitious couple has, once again, completed their parenting responsibilities.

Other images captured nearby include, Common Yellowthroat, Scarlet Tanager, American Goldfinch, House Finch and a juvenile Red-bellied Woodpecker.

Nesting Bluebirds - Killingly, CT https://www.nancylbarrettphotography.com/blog/2016/7/nesting-bluebirds The dedicated parents work tirelessly throughout the day to feed their voracious offspring. With the worst gypsy moth invasion in Southern New England since the 1980's, these eastern bluebirds don't have to travel far to locate food for their second brood of the season. This video condenses about 18 minutes of foraging into a minute and a half. The parents don't limit their diet to moths though.  They provide a natural form of pest control and have been spotted with spiders, worms, grasshoppers and more.

Eastern Box Turtle Nesting https://www.nancylbarrettphotography.com/blog/2016/6/eastern-box-turtle-nesting Just about one month after the first box turtle sighting of the season, a female known as Chip started digging her nesting site in the same location that she has selected repeatedly.  I have been observing Chip and a number of other box turtles for nine years.  If all goes well and the eggs aren't destroyed by predators, the hatchlings will dig themselves out in about 60-65 days.

Watching Baby Robins Grow https://www.nancylbarrettphotography.com/blog/2016/6/watching-baby-robins-grow The last few weeks have brought numerous varieties of new life into the world.  The wood thrush, bluebird, house wren and phoebe hatchlings are mostly hidden by their respective nesting boxes, drain pipes and tree limbs so we haven't been able to see them grow up.  Parents’ dash in and out of the nests with food for the new arrivals but observation is limited. Robins, on the other hand, tend to nest in open places where they can be easily observed.  This short video condenses three weeks of rapid growth by three robin hatchlings.  The parent birds are always nearby and go to great lengths to keep their offspring safe and dry.   The babies quickly fill the small nest, leaving Mom and Dad to stand nearby, but they swoop in at the first sign of trouble.  During a torrential rainstorm we witnessed one of the parents shielding the little hatchlings with wings protectively spread over the nest.  Watching Baby Robins GrowKillingly, CT

Five Mile River Birds https://www.nancylbarrettphotography.com/blog/2016/6/five-mile-river-birds One of my favorite places for wildlife viewing is along the Five Mile River.  Contrary to the name, the Five Mile River is actually about 23 miles long.  It meanders through Thompson, Putnam and Killingly, CT before emptying into the Quinebaug River at Danielson.  Birders won’t be disappointed.  Just find any one of the countless access points where the river intersects with a road and wait.  Images from this particular day revealed an Eastern Kingbird, Yellow Warbler, Mourning Dove and several Red-winged Blackbirds.

The ever-cheerful Indigo Bunting https://www.nancylbarrettphotography.com/blog/2016/5/indigo-bunting Anyone who prefers to sleep with the windows open will know that during the late spring and summer months the bird chorus begins at approximately 4:30 AM.  Unlike some, I enjoy waking to the cheerful singing and like to soak in the various melodies before the man-made sounds fill the air.  Right around 5:30 AM the hum of cars, trucks and motorcycles can be heard from across the valley behind my home.  At 5:50 AM airplanes begin to take off from a faraway airport and the sky fills with the whooshing of jet engines.  Above all of the undesirable sounds that we have become so accustomed to, the little Indigo Bunting sings his heart out from dawn to dusk.  With all of the other songbirds seeming to take many siestas, the Indigo Bunting can be heard throughout the day dutifully filling the air with its pleasant canary-like song.

First Box Turtle Sighting of the Season https://www.nancylbarrettphotography.com/blog/2016/5/first-box-turtle-sighting-of-the-season After months of anticipation, I spotted the first box turtle of the season.  There she was, a brown lump alongside the driveway.  At a glance she could have been mistaken for an inanimate object, but closer inspection revealed "Old Lady", a regular spring visitor.  She stood still while I examined her well-worn shell and human-like brown eyes.  Perhaps she was just awakening from her winter sleep and wasn't quite awake yet?  Old Lady is just one of several box turtles that I have been observing for years and I believe her to be very mature based upon the condition of her worn and chipped shell.   This is the ninth season for some of the "regulars" and my fascination has not waned.  Part of the allure is the fact that the box turtles are mostly unseen with the exception of a few weeks during the end of May and early June when they creep out of the woods to mate and nest.  I hope to see more of my reptilian friends over the next few weeks and look forward to sharing more photos.  Please read the previous post to learn more about what you can do to help the box turtles.  It is a re-post from 2015 but I thought it worthwhile to repeat.

Eastern Box Turtles - Watch Out For Us! https://www.nancylbarrettphotography.com/blog/2016/5/box-turtle-awareness Meet the Eastern Box Turtle

Box Turtle_103 16x9Box Turtle_103 16x9

Eastern box turtles are native to the Eastern United States and can be found throughout Connecticut near streams, grassy areas, fields and woodlands.

Similar to people, no two are alike!

Each individual turtle has distinctive markings and lives its whole life within a home range of about 2 acres.

Box turtles are approximately 5-6 inches long and are distinguished by their domed shell.

What you can do to help the turtles

  • Check before you mow!   In the heat of the day box turtles will hide under leaves or in grassy areas.  Use caution with power trimmers and lawn mowers during summer months.

  • Watch for turtles on the road during May, June and July when they are especially active.

  • If a turtle can be safely moved from a road, be sure to place it on the side it was heading towards. Never relocate a turtle to an area that is far from where it was found.

  • Never capture or keep a wild turtle as a pet.  Turtles should not be moved or handled unless they are in danger.

  • Box turtles are poor swimmers and should not be placed in water.

  • It’s important to leave nesting turtles undisturbed.

Fun facts

The box turtle is named for its ability to completely close up its shell like a trap door.

Box turtles can live to be up to 100 years old.

Male box turtles have bright red eyes and females have brown eyes.

Box turtles are omnivorous and will eat almost anything they can fit into their mouths including insects, berries, amphibians, worms, fungi and more.

During winter months, box turtles hibernate by burrowing into loose soil and decaying vegetation.

lists the box turtle as a species of special concern.

Backyard Birds - May 2016 https://www.nancylbarrettphotography.com/blog/2016/5/backyard-birds-may-2016 With the last two weeks, a colorful array of migrating birds has arrived in Killingly.  The hummingbirds materialized first on Mother's Day with a steady stream of newcomers following.  The common birds that kept me entertained all winter now take to the sidelines, replaced by Indigo buntings, Scarlet tanagers, Rose-breasted grosbeak and Common yellowthroat.  Even when they can't be seen, the chorus can be heard echoing from treetops and bramble.  While nest building is just starting for the newcomers, several other species are weeks ahead in the instinctive reproductive cycle.  An American robin nervously sits on a nest anchored in the fork of a river birch tree near my front door.  Phoebes are already feeding a new brood nesting atop a downspout, and it appears that the Bluebirds are providing insects for hatchings inside a nesting box at the edge of the yard.  Other sightings include Brown-headed cowbirds, Tree swallows, House finches and Chipping sparrows.

This video showcases just some of the wildlife seen in and around the brook area over the past 4 weeks.

Snowy April Day https://www.nancylbarrettphotography.com/blog/2016/4/snowy-april-day It's a rare April day when the opportunity arises to capture snow scenes in the Northeast corner of Connecticut. But on April 3, a heavy wet snow fell upon the landscape, followed by bright sunshine and clear blue sky. For a short period of time, the snow clung to the trees creating a dreamy landscape. In just a few hours the snow fell from the trees and the magic was gone perhaps until the next winter season.

Wild Spring https://www.nancylbarrettphotography.com/blog/2016/4/wild-spring It’s been a couple of wild weather weeks in the northeast corner with three spring snowstorms in just three weeks.  The local wildlife appears unfazed by the precipitation and temperature fluctuation.  In this short time the phoebes have returned and begun their annual scouting mission for the perfect nesting spot, usually atop a downspout on the east side of the house.  The year-round goldfinch residents are molting and changing into their bright yellow summer feathers.   While white-tailed deer lounge in a clearing a gray squirrel performs acrobatic maneuvers while munching on tender buds.  A handsome red fox passed through one early morning, but managed to zip by before the camera could be positioned.  I hope to be ready next time!

Bluebirds inspecting birdhouse https://www.nancylbarrettphotography.com/blog/2015/12/bluebirds A flock of about 20 Bluebirds stopped by this morning for a quick visit.  I grabbed the camera barely had enough time to snap a few quick shots of this pair inspecting our lonely birdhouse.  This house was apparently not up to their specifications and they quickly gathered the flock together and took off.  Hopefully, they will return in the spring when it's actually time to nest.

Side note - the birdhouse pictured sat empty all spring and summer and it turns out that the design is not quite right.  Back to the drawing board.

Red-tailed Hawk https://www.nancylbarrettphotography.com/blog/2015/12/red-tailed-hawk It's been an excellent week for spotting birds of prey with a Bald Eagle sighting a few days ago and this large Red-tailed Hawk this morning.  This impressive bird likes to sit on a large branch overlooking a small clearing but has been difficult to photograph.  Today was a lucky day with with the bird circling above just long enough for a few quick shots before disappearing from sight.

The Little Brook - November, 2015 https://www.nancylbarrettphotography.com/blog/2015/11/the-little-brook-nov-2015 It was an exceptional week for the little brook trail cam with coyotes, turkeys and a good sized buck.  This is the first week in months that the captures haven't  been dominated by squirrels and raccoons.  The coyotes typically travel in pairs and it appears that one individual triggered the camera capturing the second as it jumped the brook.  The coyote capture was brief with the animal spotting the camera almost immediately and dashing off in fear.  The turkeys, on the other hand, appear unaware of the camera.  Deer are known to be well acquainted with their surroundings and often locate the camera straightaway.  This particular buck does not approach but can clearly be seen sniffing the air with caution.

Seasons Change https://www.nancylbarrettphotography.com/blog/2015/11/changing-season The seasons change presents a whole host of familiar yet new photographic possibilities.  Once again, I find myself chasing after the "winter birds" that reappear every fall.  Although common, the Chickadee, Tufted Titmouse and Nuthatch never cease to amase with graceful acrobatics all the while, stuffing themselves with black sunflower seeds.  They graciously take turns at the feeder while posing for photos in-between flights.  Many other birds visit the feeder, but they tend to be camera shy or perhaps "people shy" might be more accurate.   More updates to come once this photographer figures out how to catch them.

The Little Brook After Dark https://www.nancylbarrettphotography.com/blog/2015/9/the-little-brook-after-dark The flow of traffic never stops at the little brook.  This week's night-time captures include coyote, bobcat, deer, skunk, raccoon and a domestic cat.  The raccoons are frequent visitors and are often captured passing through on the same nightly, down-stream route.  The second clip reveals just a few seconds of an elusive bobcat also traveling down-stream.  I hope to catch more of the bobcat but its behavior is not as predicable as some of the regular visitors.

Eastern Box Turtle Makes a Late Summer Visit https://www.nancylbarrettphotography.com/blog/2015/8/eastern-box-turtle It's unusual to see Eastern Box Turtles out in the open so late in the summer but this guy made a surprise visit this morning.  The turtles are not typically seen once the late May, early June mating season passes.   I was surprised not only by the unexpected appearance of this handsome male, but also by the fact that I've never seen this particular turtle. Past turtle encounters have always been the same individuals year after year.  Initially, I thought it was "Dent", the faithful male who appears annually to mate with the girls known as Chip, Three Legs and Old Lady but closer inspection revealed a perfect undamaged shell.   (Dent has a damaged shell due to an unknown injury). This one will be known as Schnoz going forward.  Schnoz stayed around just long enough for a few quick profile shots before disappearing into the weeds.

Best of all.....one of our local box turtles, a female named Chip, came out of hiding.  This is the eighth year that we've witnessed Chip and other box turtles rendezvous for their annual meet and greet.  The cold weather has no doubt delayed this sometimes comical ritual but with temperatures rising, we expect to see more turtles within the next two weeks.

Eastern Box Turtles - Watch Out For Us! https://www.nancylbarrettphotography.com/blog/2015/5/box-turtle-awareness Meet the Eastern Box Turtle

Vernal Pools of Life https://www.nancylbarrettphotography.com/blog/2015/4/vernal-pools-of-life A trip back to the vernal pool this week revealed a dramatic change of scenery from just one week earlier.  Now that most of the ice has melted, the wood ducks have arrived and were captured gliding around by a motion activated camera.   The wood frogs are still "quacking" away but there were no eggs in sight.  By next weekend the pond will likely be loaded with egg sacks clinging to submerged branches in the shallow water.

The wood frogs are not the only species dependent upon the vernal pool.  A walk to a nearby pool revealed a large spotted salamander busily depositing her eggs atop a mass of decaying oak leaves in just a few inches of water.  Another visit to this little pool a few days later revealed the salamanders unfortunate choice of location with ATV tracks running straight through the very spot where she was observed.   A reminder to all of the ATV enthusiasts out there - pools of water should be avoided, especially in the spring.  Many different species depend upon the vernal pool not only for reproduction but as a source of food.

Frogs On Ice https://www.nancylbarrettphotography.com/blog/2015/4/frogs-on-ice Every year around March 30th the wood frogs appear in vernal pools around Connecticut to produce the next generation of offspring.  It's always a noisy affair that can be heard from quite a distance.  Normally, the ice would be melted by the first week of April, but not this year.   The pond scene in this video was captured on April 6, 2015 and it shows that even the frogs can't wait for winter to end.

Spring....at last! https://www.nancylbarrettphotography.com/blog/2015/3/spring-at-last Even though it hasn't felt springlike this week there are signs all around.  Yesterday, the 19th of March, a small herd of deer came out of the woods to enjoy the sunshine.  Even though the air felt frigid, they were lounging around seemingly without a care in the world.  All looked surprisingly healthy in spite of the heavy snowfall and cold temperatures they endured over the past few months.

Icicle Birds https://www.nancylbarrettphotography.com/blog/2015/2/icicle-birds Have you ever wondered where birds get water from during the frozen winter months?  Drinking from icicles is just one method observed in the past few weeks.  The birds also eat snow and drink from small puddles for the much needed moisture.

Mashamoquet Brook State Park - Pomfret, CT https://www.nancylbarrettphotography.com/blog/2014/12/mashamoquet-state-park---pomfret-ct

Mashamoquet Brook State Park is a great location for a day hike with well maintained trails and plenty of interesting sights. In addition to the brook you will want to visit Table Rock, Indian Chair and, of course, Wolf Den.  Numerous trees, vines and interesting rock formations can be found along the way.  Some of the grape and bittersweet vines are enormous and must be quite old.  The photos don't accurately depict the size.  Large clusters of mature mountain laurel can be found along several of the trails.  This walk was on a winter day and must be very different from the spring and summer when the plants are in bloom.  The loop trail is about 5 miles long and is a fairly easy hike with the exception of a few steep sections.

The story of Israel Putnam and the "Last Wolf in Connecticut" can be read by pausing the slide show.  More information and directions can be found by clicking the link below.

The return trip ran along the Breakneck Pond View Trail (blue w/white dot).  The total trip was about 7 miles and took about 5 hours with many stops for picture taking and lunch.  The blue and white blazes are accompanied by red & blue which is a bit confusing if you are unfamiliar with the area.

Be sure to print a trail map before heading out which can be found on the CT, DEEP website at: http://www.ct.gov/deep/lib/deep/stateparks/maps/big_nipm.pdf

Chip the Box Turtle https://www.nancylbarrettphotography.com/blog/2014/9/chip-the-box-turtle Chip made her debut appearance June 17, 2007. At least that's when she was first photographed exploring the area behind our house looking for a nesting site.  At the time, we had no idea what she was doing or that this ritual would take place year after year.

The video below was captured seven years later on June 19, 2014 at about 6:30 AM.    She's taking a long drink from a puddle in the driveway.

Box turtles are believed to have a lifespan that can exceed 100 years.

Chip is just one of several box turtles to visit every June.
