KILLINGLY, CT - It's been nearly three months since I last reported on the local box turtle population. The story began in late May, as it does time and again. The turtles come out of the woods to mate, I take a bunch of photos, name any that I don't recognize and watch to see where the females lay the eggs. Once in awhile, I actually get to see two turtles mating. This year, I covered the eggs with a wire cage to protect them from predators after observing nest destruction in 2015. All of this is a small contribution to help keep the species alive here in my little corner of the world. I also enjoy making short nature videos and the box turtle is a favorite subject. This fascination began in 2007 when I first discovered that my place was inhabited by a number of these captivating little creatures. Box turtles are a species of special concern in CT, and many other states, so please don't capture or keep them as pets.
