KILLINGLY, CT - SLIDESHOW - Since the drawdown of Old Killingly Pond’s water level, the remaining wildlife has been forced into a much smaller and more stressed habitat.   The pond’s surface area has dropped from roughly 122 acres to fewer than 32 acres. This reduced water volume can make conditions harder for aquatic life because warmer temperatures and lower oxygen levels may develop more quickly, especially during hot weather. Birds, turtles, amphibians, insects, and shoreline animals that depend on the pond may also be affected as exposed lakebed replaces former wetland and open-water habitat. While some wildlife remains in and around the pond, the drawdown has raised serious concerns that the ecosystem is under pressure until safe water levels can be restored or a long-term dam solution is reached.
